Liposuction

There are times when no amount of exercise or dieting will reduce fat deposits in certain spots including your arms, tummy, bottom or calves.

Liposuction is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that removes localised areas of fat.  The fat is suctioned from the body through a tube called a cannula and the procedure is performed in a day surgery under general anaesthesia.

Some patients may experience mild swelling, bruising and discomfort afterwards. Compression garments or elastic bandages can be used to reduce the symptoms while healing.

Dr Cheng and his team offer a comprehensive aesthetic and reconstructive service in a caring and compassionate environment that places great importance on your supervised recovery.

Patients can return to work and resume normal activities as soon as they feel comfortable and enjoy a slimmer and more balanced appearance.

Key Questions about Liposuction

Before Procedure

How much fat can be removed with liposuction surgery?

The amount of fat removed by liposuction varies widely between individuals for reasons to do with health, medical history, lifestyle, genetics and expectations of body image following the surgery. Only your plastic surgeon can determine how much fat can be extracted, after a personal consultation and examination of your fat tissue, skin condition and a detailed discussion of your goals.

It should be noted that liposuction surgery is a sculptural cosmetic treatment to contour body areas that have been unresponsive to ongoing attempts at toning It is not a fast weight loss treatment for people with obesity. The more fat removed during liposuction, the higher the risk to the patient during the procedure and recovery.

During Procedure

Can I have liposuction during another plastic surgery operation?

Liposuction is often performed in combination with other cosmetic surgeries, particularly abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck), breast reduction and facelift. Dr Cheng can advise on the personal advantages and risks of having liposuction at the same time as other procedures, according to your health and expectations for a changed appearance.

After Procedure

If I have fat removed through liposuction, will it reappear elsewhere?

Liposuction is the process of removing fat cells from a specific area of the body. If you gain weight, fat cells in other parts of your body will expand. This means areas which are not normally susceptible to gaining fat, such as your wrists, may gain weight.

After getting liposuction, will the excess skin shrink back to size?

In most cases, yes. It depends on your genes and how elastic your skin is. If you have visible stretch marks from rapid weight gain, that’s a telling sign your skin has very little elasticity and isn’t likely to shrink back completely. The loose flesh will regain some of its old form, but not entirely.

Does liposuction leave scars?

Incisions made during liposuction are very small and placed in inconspicuous areas. Most scars visible after liposuction will heal well. After a short amount of time it will be difficult to see where they were originally made.

Will having liposuction cure cellulite?

Liposuction surgery is not a cellulite treatment, though it may lessen cellulite’s appearance in some cases. Liposuction works to contour the body’s shape from deep beneath the skin and does not treat the dimpled appearance of cellulite closer to the skin’s surface. Unfortunately you cannot be given a guarantee of any improvement to your cellulite from having liposuction.

How long do liposuction results last?

Liposuction is permanent, in the sense that it removes a quantity of fat cells from a part of the body that are in place there at a particular time. After the surgery, if you keep up good habits such as healthy eating and regular exercise, the body re-contouring from your liposuction will be long-term.

It is important to understand that the longevity of the benefits of liposuction depend on everyday factors such as weight gain, ageing, lifestyle and even genetics in some cases. For women, pregnancy following liposuction is the most likely of all occurrences to reverse the procedure’s long term effect. For this reason, women may be asked by Dr Cheng during their consultation if they are planning pregnancy in the future.

What happens during recovery from liposuction?

A special girdle is worn under your clothes for a week during recovery after having liposuction, so the skin surrounding the affected area settles evenly to your new body shape. The length of time taken off work and your break from exercise varies depending on the amount and location of your liposuction surgery, the nature of your work and type of exercise.

However, a degree of normal activity rather than complete rest is recommended immediately after the treatment, to promote circulation and reduce swelling Dr Cheng will provide a recovery plan tailored to your lifestyle.

Is there any scarring from liposuction?

Liposuction surgery has advanced to substantially minimise scarring. Very small incisions are made at the body’s natural skin creases where they are generally concealed from view and any resulting scars fade over time.
